Step-By-Step - The Waterlilies

Step 1 - Background Colour (forms the basis of my colour scheme and shapes how the dots contrast)

Step 2 - Placing the Flower Centres (this will form the basic structure of the painting and everything with revolve around these)

Step 3 - Flower Outlines (laying out the colours of the flowers)

Step 4 - Finished Flowers

Step 5 - Outline of the Lily Pads

Step 6 - Lily Pads Finished

Step 7 - Beginning the Colour Scheme for the Water Ripples

Step 8 - Nearly Done...

Step 9 - Finshed Product!! Photo is brighter as I took this outside in morning sun after coating with gloss (which also helps to bring out the colours)

The Waterlilies (2009)

Size: 60.5cm H x 152cm W

See close-ups below or click above on main image for a supersized view!

Well, I'm glad this one is finished. I think I've had about enough of waterlilies for sometime...but it's fun to look at the previous waterlily paintings to see how my ideas evolved to where they are now. I'm very happy with this painting and had so much fun with patterns and colours!

Ripples Among Flowers (2009) - Waterlily Series

Size: 40.5cm W x 30.5cm H x 3.5cm D

I used a darker background as my starting point and it contrasted well with the dots I used I think gave a feeling of depth. I really like the purple flowers & will be using them in the next painting (a really big canvas). I tried to get some differentiation with the concentric circles used for the water - a larger concentration in centre and fewer (but larger) towards the canvas edges...

Feeling more confident that I have enough 'good' ideas tried to pool them together for a big canvas - and looking forward to seeing finished result!

This acrylic painting is constructed of coloured dots approximately 1mm in diameter.

Floating Lilies (2009) - Waterlily Series

Size: 71cm W x 36cm H x 3.5cm D

Okay...so it's another practise piece. I'm just trying to get all the elements right before I do a huge canvas with a stack of waterlilies. I feel that I am nearly ready...but am going to experiment with two more smaller canvas' to try out a couple more ideas & designs. I especially like the water effect I've achieved with this one...

Water Construction (2008)

Size: 137.5cm W x 70.5cm

Depicting in the form of dot-art the atomic & molecular structure of water. Each aspect of the painting represents the nuclear & electron configuration as well as the bonding type.

What is water? This painting shows the sub-atomic and molecular structure of water - not pure H2O, but a liquid containing dissolved ions essential to life. The composition of water tells the story of the journey of H2O from the atmosphere to earth to ocean. Each stage impacts both the composition of water and the environment.

• Ions represented are:
Chlorine: Cl- (orange)
Sulphur: S2- (yellow)
Magnesium: Mg2+ (pink)
Sodium: Na+ (red)
Calcium: Ca2+ (green)
Potassium: K+ (purple)
Carbonate: HCO3- (dissolved carbon dioxide)

• Each atom shows the protons and neutrons in the nucleus and the electrons are represented in their orbitals around the nucleus. The outer bonding orbital is represented as either white for a positive charge or black for a negative charge.• The water molecules show both the covalent bonding between the atoms of the molecule and the intermolecular hydrogen bonding.

This acrylic painting is constructed of coloured dots approximately 1mm in diameter.
