Tidal Reflections (2009)

Size: 121.5cm H x 40.5cm W x 3.5cm D

See close-ups below or click above on main image for a supersized view!

Okay, first painting completed since the big move. Took a lot longer than anticipated and my back felt so sore during last couple of painting days...but I was determined to just get it done! Glad I finally completed such a tall & narrow seascape piece - as I have wanted to see what one would look like for a long time..thought it might look nice in a hallway entrace? Anyway, good practice refining this style and end product comes with enjoyable sense of satisfaction!

(Completed 29th October 2009)

Coral Ribbons (2009) - Coral Reef Series

Size: 60.5cm W x 30.5cm H x 3.5cm D

I completed this on the 1st June then went on holiday. So I'm a bit delayed in posting it...sorry :(
I've been wanting to do some more panorama's - and I felt some doing some more corals after all the waterlilies. I am probably more fascinated with coral than any other subject matter and probably will be for some time. I am also trasfixed with the quality of light light and its movement through the ocena water.
My partner says to just keep painting as many as I feel like painting, because when I've had enough of them there won't be any more....Probably a wise philosophy.
Anyway, holiday was good and feel inspired to do some stuf with ferns soon. They have been on my mind for about 6 months now and after talking with a Maori woman about the symbolism of the fern leaf I am even more inspired - thanks for that!
Anyway, hope you all like my lastest painting & wil try to fit in a couple more post soon. Cheers ;o)
This acrylic painting is constructed of coloured dots approximately 1mm in diameter.

Yzerfontein Vignette

From the highway, you go down to Yzerfontein waterfront, down, down, past the lime kilns (registered National Monuments), past the small CBD and the large 70's era houses. And there it is: one of the most beautiful stretches of water on the coast! The beach meanders on and on for many kilometers in both directions. Should you decide to walk this coastline from the harbour in the direction of Cape Town, you will see millions of birds, beaches with rocks for anglers, waves for surfers and a feast for the eyes for all. In the ocean you will notice the pretty guano encrusted little mound, aptly called Meeurots (Gull Rock), where seagulls and cormorants dry their wings after fishing. There is also a very close view of Dassen-eiland where penguins live and breed.

In this view we look back at the town. Man-made breakwater rocks are added to the large natural rocks to build a safe landing passage for returning fishing boats. Alert gulls on their cluster of rocks keep an eye on the returning yield and form a frame for the scene behind them, a composition that helped me to overcome the awkward square form of the canvas.

Cottages by the Sea

In the Cape vernacular architecture, form always followed function. Seaviews, etc were of no importance. Tiny doors and windows meant that the interiors were protected against the elements. When a basic house became too small, a flat-roofed structure was simply added to the existing building. And of course, the community was very supportive and there were few walls and fences dividing properties.

Today I really wanted to paint blob people: a few details, movement, light and shadow. The picture should be viewed from a distance to fill in the necessary - viewing it on a wall is perfect.

A Fisherman mending his Net

The only way to fight this weather is to stay thickly dressed and paint some bright pics. So lay on the tubes of Yellow Ocre and Indian Red!Nothing serious. Everybody cannot aspire to be the next Old Grande Dame of SA Art!

Girl By the Sea

Unknown Title but worth Clicking for Larger Image (detail amazing)

I found this painting in an antiques/collectables store. It only measures about 16cm wide x 12cm high (not inluding frame). I can't make out the artists name and have no idea when painted (maybe 1920's or earlier?).

I am just so breathtaken by the detail & composition. It makes me feel that I am the girl standing there with the wind in my hair looking out at the sea with a sad longing. I can almost hear the cry of the sea gulls, the crash of the waves and smell the salt spray in the air. I feel locked in suspense waiting for that magnificient wave to crash to the shore in a fury of white foam.

This piece not only evokes many emotions, but also catches curiosity with its' mystery girl. Who is she? Is she waiting for someone? Is she sad, lonely, or lost in quiet contemplation?

This piece embodies everything I believe a great painting should be.

Tidal Motion (2007)

Size: 51cm W x 60.5cm H

An underwater seascape in dot-art focusing on the water eddies formed around the corals.

This acrylic painting is constructed of coloured dots approximately 1mm in diameter.

This painting is very similar to a diptech that won me 1st place at the Gold Coast Art Show. But since I was still working on the painting late the night before I has to take the painting in..I very stupidly forgot to take photos....and the painting sold and was picked up before I could ever see it again....never again!

Tandem Motion (2008)

Size: 41cm W x 51cm H

An underwater seascape in dot-art focusing on the water eddies formed around the corals.
I tried a different technique with the water this time...my partner likes it, but I'm a bit iffy. I think I will have another go at this technique and see what happens...

Snapper & Barramundi (2006)

Size: 90cm W x 60 cm H

This painting depicts two of the most sought after Australian salt-water fish – prized for their delicate flesh. The waves & currents of the sea are all that stands between the fisherman and prey.

The painting is constructed of coloured dots approximately 1mm in diameter.

I was desperate for a job once, so I took up an offer that had been made to me a year prior to work at a fish&chip shop. Anyway, the owner was a really great guy who treated me like a human being & friend...so this was for him.

Shallow Waters (2007)

Size: 48cmW x 31.5cmH (including frame)

A miniature sea scape in panorama...small but fraught with difficulties - the dots had to get smaller to retain the same 'resolution' as larger works.

My partner challenged me to paint something really small..so upon completion I forced him to make a frame for it!

This acrylic painting is a diptech constructed of coloured dots approximately <1mm>

Paradise (2006)

Size: 90cm W x 1220cm H

The colours of the waters changing with depth, flower-like anemones & tropical fish - a feeling of paradise & inner contentment diving on a coral reef.

This acrylic painting is constructed of coloured dots approximately 1mm in diameter.

My partner kept bugging me that I only 'dotted' paintings and didn't actually 'paint'. So I did this one to shut him up. This is an early piece but a favorite of mine and is also my mother-in-laws favorite (so I'm not the only one who likes it!)

Ocean Fields (2007) - Coral Reef Series

Size: 90cm W x 60cm H

Another 'experiment' in depicting both the coral reef & the water movement when looking up from the bottom....a myriad of patterns & dancing light I can barely begin to express...
I just love painting these because I can be so creative with the shapes & colours. Make things clash or compliment...
This acrylic painting is constructed of coloured dots approximately 1mm in diameter.

Moonlight Sonata (2007)

Size: 52cm W x 61cm H

The colours of the reef as the day is ending...everything is still & serene, but vibrant life still lurks! A changing of the guard for much of the life abounding – many corals truly spring to life under the influence of the moon which guides their rhythms.

This is also one of my fav's. I love the darkness of it and the way greens & pinks penetrate the blue majority providing an accent. I wish I had more photo's, but I sold it to one of the exhibition organisers who is now a bit of a fan...I guess I'll have to get around to painting another like it.

This acrylic painting is constructed of coloured dots approximately 1mm in diameter.

Micro-Corals No.2 - Coral Reef Series

Size: 30.5cm W x 30.5cm H x 3.5cm D

An underwater seascape in dot-art focusing on the myriad colours & shapes of corals from a ‘bird’s-eye view’. Experimenting with the interplay of different shapes & colours.
This acrylic painting is constructed of coloured dots approximately 1mm in diameter.

I was feeling a bit depressed that I didn't get many paintings done last year (only 8) so I thought I'd do some smaller ones as I get a real kick out of actually finishing a painting...and I ended up doing 5 this month!

This painting was part of a group of my paintings exhibited at Robina Rotary Art Show 2007 which received the 'Encouragement Award'. Coral Reef (2006)

Size: 100cm W x 98.5cm H x 2cm D

An underwater seascape detailing a close-up of various hard & soft coral life while at the same time representing the appearance of the reef from the air at a distance.

This was the first of the 'coral reef' series and is still a favorite even though it is not as refined as some of the later ones. I enjoy the balance of colours and the size of the painting is also quite impactful.

Cooperation (2007)

Size: 75cm W x 60cm H

An underwater seascape from a 'bird's eye' view detailing a close-up of various hard & soft coral life.

I tried to get the impressions of small reef fish darting about the corals - but I think the fish need a bit more practice & refinement...oh well, it was a first try.

This painting was shown at the Robina Rotary 2007 show and was part of a group of paintings that won me an encouragement award - my first award ever!! I was running around the house & throwing the kids up in the air with joy & just generally going stupid for about an hour with excitement that my art had been critiqed as being worthy of some merit!

The painting is constructed of coloured dots approximately 1mm in diameter.

Below the Waves (2008)

Size: 70cm W x 89cm H

This painting is a mosaic of the lasting impressions I have of diving on the corals reefs of Australia and the Pacific Islands. My strongest fascination was of the way the light was refracted through the tidal waters of the reef, which were in turn causing the soft corals to sway – appearing to be flowers blown by the wind. The movement of water on the reef linked everything together and instilled a sense of awe and peace in me.

This acrylic painting is constructed of coloured dots approximately 1mm in diameter.

Below are some close-ups showing finer details.
